Vintage Pandemic Ad

For my Philippine Art History midterm project, I recreated the Colonial American style of advertising with a pandemic context. With the pandemic still
in place, I can only imagine how scared mothers are for their babies, especially new
ones. I specifically chose this as my content because I was inspired by Katherine
Dacanay’s thesis on how the Americans targeted Filipino women to market their
products. It’s similar to the rise of capitalism and consumerism targeted women in
America because they believe that housewives have nothing else to do but shop and
that women entering the workforce now have standards to follow to become ‘employable’.

Dacanay also mentioned how American ads would talk about the science behind
their products, a reflection of the shift from believing baseless statements from
neighbors to (supposed) scientifically crafted products made by “professionals”. These
ads would make claims that doctors or scientists approved as a marketing tactic. There
is also a subtle use of implementing fear into its audience, making them aware of new
dangers found by science.
